What the Canton Recycle Center Is Used For

The Canton Recycle Center is a City facility operated in partnership with the Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Recycling District. It handles several materials that should not simply be placed in household trash or in an ordinary recycling cart.

Its role includes household hazardous waste, appliances, electronics, residential tires, scrap metal and selected basic recyclables. Because those materials require different handling, the appointment form asks users to identify what they are bringing before scheduling.

Household recycling

Use for approved paper, cardboard, metal cans, glass bottles/jars and plastic bottles/jugs under the District’s preparation rules.

Special materials

Appliances, electronics, tires, scrap metal and household hazardous products require the correct appointment category.

Not a general dump

Furniture, trash, mattresses, construction material, yard waste and several other items need a different disposal route.

Current management: the City announced that management transitioned from Canton City Public Health to the City of Canton Building Code Department in July 2025 while continuing the partnership with the Recycling District.

Canton Recycle Center Hours and Lunch Closure

Day Standard status Planning note
Monday Closed Use the appointment system for another available day.
Tuesday 9:00 AM–3:00 PM Closed 12:00 PM–1:00 PM for lunch; appointment required.
Wednesday Closed No regular public drop-off hours listed.
Thursday Closed No regular public drop-off hours listed.
Friday 9:00 AM–3:00 PM Closed 12:00 PM–1:00 PM for lunch; appointment required.
Saturday Closed No standard Saturday public drop-off schedule.
Sunday Closed No standard Sunday public drop-off schedule.
Do not arrive during lunch. The City specifically lists a 12:00 PM–1:00 PM closure even on regular Tuesday and Friday collection days.

The City also closed the center from July 6 through July 27, 2026 for planned upgrades. That closure is now past, so current trips should be based on the live City page and appointment system rather than the old July notice.

Appointment, ID and Eligibility Rules

Appointments are mandatory. The current District scheduler states that its locations are open to residents of Stark, Tuscarawas and Wayne Counties.

Residents

Residents of Stark, Tuscarawas and Wayne Counties can schedule approved household materials through the current Canton appointment system.

Bring ID to the appointment, especially for programs such as tire collection where identity and annual limits matter.

Businesses and organizations

The current District newsletter says governments, businesses, nonprofits, schools and farms may bring scrap metal, old appliances and electronics only.

They may not use the residential household-hazardous-waste or tire program.

How to schedule

  1. Open the official District appointment form.
  2. Select Stark County Canton Recycle Center.
  3. Select every material category you plan to bring.
  4. Enter the tire quantity if applicable.
  5. Choose an available Tuesday or Friday appointment.
  6. Bring ID and arrive outside the noon–1 PM lunch closure.

If you do not have internet access, call the City at 330-438-4683 or the Recycling District at 330-874-2258 and choose option 1. The City also lists 330-936-2802 for appointment assistance.

Accepted Categories at Canton Recycle Center

The official appointment form currently lists six main Canton drop-off categories. Individual items inside those categories still have preparation and eligibility rules.

Household hazardous waste

Accepted household chemicals include selected acids, cleaners, automotive fluids, rechargeable batteries, oil-based paint products, pesticides, pool chemicals and solvents.

Electronics

Household electronics are accepted by appointment. Keep like items together when bringing a larger quantity.

Appliances

Small and large appliances are accepted. Appliances must be empty of food, liquids and other loose material.

Tires

Passenger, light-truck, lawn-mower, ATV, bicycle, motorcycle and similar residential tires are accepted under the published limit.

Basic recyclables

Cardboard, paper, metal cans, glass bottles/jars and plastic bottles/jugs are included in the current appointment system.

Scrap metal

The District says ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals are accepted.

Cardboard, Paper, Cans, Glass and Plastic Bottles

The Canton Recycle Center’s basic recycling stream is deliberately narrow. The District lists paper, metal/aluminum cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and jugs, and flattened cardboard.

Material Preparation Keep out
Cardboard Flatten before arriving Loose packing trash and plastic bags
Paper Keep clean and dry Wet or heavily contaminated material
Metal / aluminum cans Clean, dry and empty Food and liquid residue where practical
Glass Food/beverage bottles and jars Random non-container glass
Plastic Bottles and jugs only; leave caps on Plastic bags and unrelated plastic objects
Simple rule: clean, dry and empty; flatten cardboard; keep plastic bags out; use reusable containers for transport.

For oversized moving-box loads, see the Cardboard Recycling Center Near Me guide.

Electronics and Appliance Recycling

Electronics

The Canton Recycle Center accepts electronics by appointment. The District says electronics should not arrive in plastic bags. Use a cardboard box or reusable plastic tote instead.

If you have many electronics, keep similar items grouped together so they can be unloaded and sorted efficiently.

Appliances

Small and large appliances are accepted. The District says refrigerant does not need to be removed from refrigerators or other Freon-containing appliances before Canton drop-off.

However, appliances can be refused when food, liquids or other material remain inside. Empty and clean the appliance before loading it.

Organization/business exception: current District guidance says businesses, schools, governments, nonprofits and farms may use the center for appliances and electronics even though they cannot use the residential tire or HHW program.

For broader preparation guidance, see the Electronic Recycling Center guide.

Tire Recycling Rules

The District accepts specified residential tires through the appointment program. The rules are designed for personal vehicles and home equipment rather than commercial tire disposal.

Accepted examples

  • Passenger-vehicle tires
  • Light-truck tires
  • Lawn-mower tires
  • ATV tires
  • Bicycle tires
  • Motorcycle tires
  • Similar household-use tires

Limits

  • Maximum 10 tires per person per year
  • Transport 10 or fewer at one time
  • Tires may be on or off the rim
  • Bring ID
  • No business/commercial/nonprofit/government/farm tire loads
Do not exceed the transport limit. The District states that transporting more than 10 tires at once requires a county health-department permit.

Household Hazardous Waste at Canton Recycle Center

The permanent Canton program accepts a broad list of household hazardous materials by appointment. These materials should come from eligible household use unless the District specifically says otherwise.

Automotive products

  • Antifreeze
  • Automotive grease
  • Brake fluid
  • Gasoline
  • Gas mixtures
  • Used motor oil

Household chemicals

  • Acids
  • Adhesives
  • Aerosol cans
  • Bleach
  • Caustics
  • Cleaners
  • Pesticides
  • Pool chemicals
  • Solvents

Other accepted HHW examples

  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Lithium primary batteries
  • Mercury-containing devices
  • Oil-based paint
  • Stains
  • Thinners
  • Varnishes
  • Cooking oil

Transport hazardous materials safely

  • Keep caps tight.
  • Keep containers upright.
  • Do not mix different chemicals.
  • Use a reusable tote or safe container for possible leaks.
  • Tell staff if motor oil or another product is mixed with something else.
  • Use approved fuel containers for gasoline, kerosene or diesel.
Never mix bleach and ammonia. The District specifically warns that this combination can produce a fatal hazard.

Latex Paint vs Oil-Based Paint

Canton’s program makes an important distinction between latex paint and hazardous oil/solvent-based coatings.

Latex paint

Not accepted at the Canton Recycle Center.

The District instructs residents to dry latex paint with absorbent material such as kitty litter, shredded newspaper or sand. Once completely hardened, it can go into regular trash under the District’s guidance.

Oil-based products

Oil-based paint, solvent-based paint, stains, thinner and varnish are among the listed household hazardous materials accepted by appointment.

A practical way to identify oil-based paint is to check whether cleanup instructions call for mineral spirits or paint thinner instead of soap and water.

Never pour leftover paint down a drain or onto the ground. Use the District’s published disposal route for the actual paint type.

Televisions: Accepted, but Verify What Happens After Drop-Off

The Recycling District’s current resident guidance says televisions can be taken to the Canton Recycle Center by appointment and that there is no disposal charge.

However, District materials are not fully consistent about whether every type of television is actually recycled after collection. One older official District page states that CRT and flat-screen televisions collected through this service are sent to landfill, while newer resident material describes flat screens as recyclable.

If true recycling is important to you: call 330-874-2258, option 1, and ask how your specific television type will be handled before scheduling the appointment.

Items You Should Not Bring to Canton Recycle Center

The District publishes several items that need another route. Do not add them to an appointment load simply because they are difficult to dispose of.

Household and bulky waste

  • Furniture
  • Carpet
  • Mattresses
  • Trash
  • Clothing
  • Toys

Construction / special items

  • Building materials
  • Construction debris
  • Large cylinders
  • Explosives
  • Smoke detectors

Other non-accepted materials

  • Latex paint
  • Plastic bags
  • Yard waste
  • DEA-regulated drugs
  • Biomedical waste
  • Commercial tire loads

Sharps also need special handling. District guidance says they should never be placed in curbside or drop-off recycling. Use an FDA-cleared sharps container where possible or follow current local household-disposal instructions.

Canton Curbside Recycling and Other Basic Drop-Off Options

The appointment-only Recycle Center is not the only recycling service in Canton. The City also operates a curbside recycling program for Canton residents who receive City sanitation service.

The City describes curbside recycling as a joint program with the Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Recycling District and says it is free to eligible City sanitation customers.

Basic curbside preparation

  • Lightly rinse cans, bottles and containers.
  • Follow the City’s current lid/cap instructions for curbside material.
  • Keep paper products separate as directed.
  • Place the recycling container away from trash containers on collection day.

For residents with unusually large amounts of ordinary recyclables, the City also maintains a drop-off information page and recommends available recycling locations rather than forcing everything through normal weekly curbside pickup.

Yard Waste Does Not Belong at Canton Recycle Center

The main Canton Recycle Center does not accept ordinary yard waste through its appointment program. The Recycling District maintains separate yard-waste disposal options throughout Stark, Tuscarawas and Wayne Counties.

District guidance lists private yard-waste processors that may accept materials such as leaves, grass trimmings, brush, wood chips and shrub/tree trimmings. Fees and hours can vary by facility.

Canton Township option

Canton Township separately operates a residential yard-waste site for eligible Canton Township, Pike Township and Village of East Sparta residents. The Township currently says the seasonal site opens April 1, operates seven days a week from 8:00 AM–7:00 PM, and requires a $50 access-card registration or renewal.

This Township program is not the same service as the City of Canton Recycle Center.

For broader planning, see the Yard Waste Recycling Center guide.

Before-You-Go Checklist

  1. Confirm your county eligibility. The District serves Stark, Tuscarawas and Wayne Counties.

  4. Bring ID. ID is specifically required for your visit and for the residential tire program.
  5. Avoid the lunch closure. Do not plan your arrival between noon and 1:00 PM.
