Huntington Recycling Center: Hours, Accepted Items & Rules

Town of Huntington • residential drop-off • e-waste • HHW • paint • textiles

Sort Your Huntington Load Before You Reach the New York Avenue Gate

The Town of Huntington Recycling Center handles far more than bottles and cardboard, but each material follows its own rules. Regular recyclables, electronics, household hazardous waste, paint, batteries, empty propane tanks, textiles, plastic film, scrap metal and bagged grass should not all be treated as one mixed load.

The safest plan is to identify the material first, arrive well before the gate cutoff and bring proof of residency where required. The Town’s 2026 calendar also identifies the center as residential-use only and says commercial vehicles are not allowed.

Address 641 New York Avenue, Huntington, NY 11743
Main schedule Tuesday–Saturday, 8 AM–4 PM
Safer gate cutoff Plan to enter before 3:45 PM
HHW hours Tuesday–Saturday, 9 AM–3 PM

Quick answer: address, hours, phone and who can use the center

The Town of Huntington Recycling Center is located at 641 New York Avenue, Huntington, NY 11743. The Town currently lists phone numbers 631-446-3653 and 631-427-6377 for Recycling Center questions.

The regular recycling window is Tuesday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, excluding holidays. The Town’s official 2026 sanitation calendar says gates close at 3:45 PM, so arriving before that time is the safer choice.

Household hazardous waste uses a shorter 9:00 AM–3:00 PM window. The 2026 Town calendar says the Recycling Center is for residential use only and that commercial vehicles are not allowed.

Gate-time conflict: one live Town Recycling Center webpage currently says the gate closes at 3:50 PM, while the Town’s 2026 sanitation calendar and current e-waste instructions use 3:45 PM. Plan around 3:45 PM rather than risking a rejected late arrival.

What the Town of Huntington Recycling Center Is For

This page is about the municipal Town of Huntington facility on Long Island, New York. It is not a Huntington Beach recycling site, a Huntington, Indiana facility, a private scrap yard or a general landfill.

The Recycling Center combines standard residential recycling with several special collection programs. That makes it useful for materials that cannot simply go into the normal curbside recycling container.

Residency Rules, Incorporated Villages and Commercial Vehicles

The Town’s current recycling guidance says the Recycling Center is available to Town residents, including residents of incorporated villages who may not receive the same curbside recycling service as the Town Refuse District.

However, the Town’s official 2026 sanitation calendar clearly labels the Recycling Center “Residential use only; no commercial vehicles.”

Town residents

The municipal center is intended for residential use. Keep proof of residency available, especially when using services that expressly require it.

Incorporated villages

The Town says residents from incorporated villages can use the Recycling Center even when their local curbside service differs.

Commercial-vehicle warning: do not assume a pickup, van or truck displaying business markings will be admitted simply because the material came from a residence. Call the facility first if vehicle eligibility is unclear.

Drop-Off Center vs Huntington Curbside Recycling

Many bottles, cans, plastic containers, paper and cardboard can already be recycled at the curb if your property receives Town Refuse District service. The Recycling Center becomes especially useful for special materials or residents whose local collection arrangements differ.

Town curbside recycling uses a dual-stream approach. Bottles, cans and eligible plastics are kept separate from paper recycling on the applicable collection schedule.

Plastic-bag warning: recyclables placed in plastic bags are not accepted for normal Huntington curbside recycling. The Town instructs sanitation carters to leave a recycling load behind if prohibited plastic bags are mixed into the recycling container.

The Town says curbside recycling containers should generally be rigid, lidded containers no larger than 45 gallons and should weigh no more than 50 pounds when full.

E-Waste Recycling: Computers, TVs, Phones and Printers

The Town operates a no-cost e-waste drop-off program at 641 New York Avenue. Current instructions list Tuesday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with gates closing at 3:45 PM.

Computers

Computers, small-scale servers, monitors, keyboards, mice and related computer peripherals are covered.

TVs and video equipment

Televisions, cathode-ray tubes, VCRs, DVRs, DVD players, converter boxes and cable/satellite receivers are included.

Printers and scanners

Computer-use printers under 100 pounds, scanners and fax machines are included in the Town’s covered-equipment list.

Game consoles

Electronic and video-game consoles are accepted through the e-waste program.

Cell phones

The Town specifically says cell phones are accepted in addition to equipment covered by state law.

Portable electronics

Portable digital music players and similar listed small electronic equipment are accepted.

Erase personal information first. Back up files, sign out of cloud accounts, remove SIM or memory cards you want to keep and factory-reset devices where practical before recycling them.

For broader data and electronics preparation, see the electronic recycling center guide.

Oversized Televisions: Curbside Appointment Option

The Town currently offers a separate curbside e-waste option for televisions 27 inches or larger for eligible Town curbside-service addresses.

Call the Refuse Department. Use 631-446-3656 to schedule the oversized-TV pickup.
Confirm your address is eligible. The Town Refuse District does not cover every incorporated village, condominium, co-op, gated community or commercially serviced property.
Wait for the scheduled date. Do not put the television out before you have the appointment.
Set the TV out before 6:00 AM. The Town instructs customers to place an eligible large television at the curb before 6 AM on the scheduled pickup date.
Smaller electronics: the special curbside appointment is for oversized televisions. Smaller electronics should use the Recycling Center or an approved retail take-back program.

Small Appliances Are Not the Same as E-Waste

This distinction prevents a common rejected-load problem. The Town says small electric appliances such as hair dryers, curling irons, toasters, toaster ovens, mixers, slow cookers and clothes irons are not accepted through the e-waste program.

However, small metal appliances can be taken to the Recycling Center’s scrap-metal bin. The Town specifically mentions toasters, electric fry pans, range hoods, small hand and power tools, tire rims and silverware as examples.

Route rule: a desktop computer belongs in e-waste; a metal toaster belongs in scrap metal. Do not unload both into the same collection area.

Household Hazardous Waste: 9 AM–3 PM and a Five-Gallon Limit

The Town’s STOP facility—“Stop Throwing Out Pollutants”—operates at the Recycling Center from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Tuesday through Saturday. Proof of residency is required.

Automotive

Antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid, gasoline, kerosene, waste oil and automotive batteries are listed.

Home chemicals

Bleach, ammonia, drain cleaner, oven cleaner, disinfectants, degreasers and spot removers are accepted examples.

Lawn and pool

Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, weed killer, insecticides, rodent killer and pool chemicals are listed.

Workshop chemicals

Solvents, paint thinner, stripper, varnish, lacquer, wood preservatives, acids and flammable liquids are among the listed HHW categories.

Quantity limit: the current Town HHW page lists a maximum of five gallons of household hazardous waste per visit. The Town’s 2026 calendar further instructs residents to bring no more than five gallons or one large-capacity sealed lead-acid or lithium-ion battery per person per day.

How to transport HHW safely

Use the original container when possible. Original labels make identification safer.
Secure containers upright. Prevent tipping, leaks and breakage during transportation.
Do not mix products. Never combine leftover household chemicals into a single container.
Do not leave hazardous waste in a hot vehicle. The Town warns against extended storage in a hot, unventilated vehicle.
Do not smoke near chemical products. Many household hazardous materials are flammable or reactive.

Paint Recycling: PaintCare Rules Are Different From HHW Rules

The Town partners with PaintCare for leftover architectural paint. Accepted PaintCare products can be brought to the Recycling Center with a five-gallon-per-visit Town limit.

Paint product PaintCare status Important preparation
Latex / acrylic / water-based house paint Accepted Original labeled container, secured lid
Oil-based architectural paint Accepted Container no larger than 5 gallons
Primer / sealer / undercoat Accepted Original manufacturer label required
Stain / varnish / shellac Accepted when qualifying architectural coating Closed, non-leaking container
Aerosol spray paint Not a PaintCare product Use the appropriate HHW route
Paint thinner / mineral spirits / solvent Not a PaintCare product Use HHW instead
Auto or marine paint Not a PaintCare product Check household hazardous-waste eligibility
PaintCare container rules: open, leaking, empty or unlabeled containers are not accepted through the PaintCare drop-off program.

Battery Recycling: Know the Battery Type First

The Town’s Recycling Center page lists auto, marine and rechargeable batteries among accepted materials, while the hazardous-waste program includes several battery types.

Vehicle batteries

Automotive and marine batteries are listed as accepted. Transport them upright and secure them against tipping.

Rechargeable batteries

Rechargeable household batteries are accepted through the Town’s recycling/hazardous-waste programs.

Alkaline batteries

The Town’s HHW page specifically says non-hazardous alkaline batteries are not processed through the hazardous-waste facility.

Damaged lithium battery: swollen, crushed, punctured, burned or actively overheating lithium batteries need extra care. Call the Recycling Center before transporting a visibly damaged battery.

For battery-type and terminal-protection guidance, see the battery recycling center guide.

Fluorescent and LED Bulbs vs Incandescent Bulbs

Town guidance directs residents with residential fluorescent lamps, including CFLs, to the Recycling Center. The Town’s recycling guidance also says fluorescent and LED bulbs can be processed through the Recycling Center.

Traditional incandescent bulbs are treated differently and are directed to household trash under the Town’s current guidance.

Broken fluorescent lamp: fluorescent lamps can contain mercury. Do not deliberately crush them. If you have a broken bulb or a large unusual quantity, call before transporting it.

Propane Tank Recycling: Empty Tanks Up to 25 Pounds

The Recycling Center accepts propane tanks up to 25 pounds at no charge. The Town describes this as approximately the size of a typical barbecue propane cylinder.

The tank must be empty. The Town specifically requires propane cylinders to be empty before drop-off and warns residents never to place a propane tank in normal household trash.

The accepted tanks are reconditioned and/or recycled as scrap metal.

Clothing and Textile Recycling: Even Stained Fabric Can Qualify

The Recycling Center has a clothing and textile collection bin. The Town accepts many clean and dry textiles, including material that may no longer be suitable for resale.

Clothing

Shirts, pants, dresses, coats, jackets, suits, socks, underwear, bras, ties and scarves are listed.

Shoes and accessories

Shoes in pairs, boots, sneakers, hats, gloves, belts and handbags are accepted examples.

Household textiles

Towels, sheets, blankets, comforters, curtains and table linens are listed.

Stained clothing and textile scraps may still qualify when they are dry because they can be repurposed through textile-recycling markets.

Do not bring moldy or wet textiles. The Town says soiled, rotted or moldy textiles can contaminate the collection. Place acceptable textiles in a tied plastic bag to keep them clean and dry.

Plastic Bags and Film: Drop-Off Only, Not Curbside Recycling

Plastic film is not accepted through Huntington’s normal curbside recycling stream. The Town operates a separate NexTrex plastic-film drop-off program.

Accepted examples

Grocery bags, produce bags, bread bags, newspaper sleeves and dry-cleaning bags.

Shipping film

Shipping and mailing bags, bubble wrap, zipper-style storage bags and qualifying flexible film packaging are listed.

Preparation

Film must be clean, dry and free of food residue.

The Recycling Center at 641 New York Avenue is a primary Town plastic-film drop-off. Small quantities can also currently be taken to Town Hall and the John J. Flanagan Center.

2026 program update: the Town says its NexTrex participation shifted to quarterly challenges beginning January 1, 2026, with a 250-pound quarterly collection goal.

Bagged Grass Drop-Off: $2 Per Bag and Five-Bag Limit

Grass clippings are not collected through the Town’s normal curbside yard-waste program. The Recycling Center offers a paid bagged-grass option.

Grass rule Current Town information
Fee $2 per bag
Visit limit Five bags per visit
Residency Proof of residency required
Normal curbside collection Grass clippings are not collected with normal Town yard-waste pickup

Scrap Metal Drop-Off: Recycling, Not a Cash Scrap Yard

The Town accepts scrap metal and small metal appliances. That does not mean the municipal Recycling Center operates like a private scrap buyer or posts daily metal prices.

Metal items such as small hand and power tools, tire rims, silverware, metal toasters, electric frying pans and range hoods can use the scrap-metal stream when they meet Town rules.

No cash-price assumption: if your goal is to sell copper, brass, aluminum or another valuable metal, compare private licensed scrap yards instead of assuming the Town will pay for the material.

For scrap-yard buying and preparation questions, see the metal recycling center guide.

Materials That Need Another Route

Material Current rule Better next step
Ammunition Not accepted at HHW facility Contact the appropriate law-enforcement or NYS DEC guidance route
Explosives / fireworks Not accepted Do not transport to ordinary recycling center; seek official disposal guidance
Fire extinguishers Not accepted through HHW Use Town/DEC disposal guidance
Radioactive material Not accepted Contact the proper regulatory disposal route
Medical / infectious waste Not accepted at HHW Use medical-waste or approved healthcare disposal
Medicines / pharmaceuticals Not accepted at HHW Use a medication drop-off program
Syringes Not accepted through HHW Use the Town’s sharps-disposal guidance
Smoke detectors Not processed at HHW facility Follow manufacturer/Town smoke-detector disposal guidance
Empty HHW containers Town HHW page says empty containers are not accepted Follow the Town’s regular disposal instructions for the container
Commercial hazardous waste Not accepted at household HHW facility Use an authorized commercial hazardous-waste service

Business and Commercial Recycling: Do Not Mix It With Household Drop-Off Rules

The Town’s 2026 sanitation calendar labels the municipal Recycling Center as residential use only and states no commercial vehicles. Commercial users should not interpret household drop-off rules as blanket permission to bring business waste.

New York law separately requires businesses and other covered entities to recycle e-waste rather than dispose of it as garbage. The Town publishes commercial e-waste guidance, but a business should confirm the current approved process with the Town before loading commercial electronics.

Call script for a questionable commercial load

“I have [material] generated by [home/business/nonprofit] and would arrive in a [vehicle type]. Can the 641 New York Avenue Recycling Center accept this load, or do I need a commercial recycling provider?”

Before-You-Go Huntington Recycling Center Checklist

Confirm the correct Huntington. Use 641 New York Avenue in Huntington, New York, not a recycling center in Huntington Beach or another city with the same name.
Identify the material program. Separate normal recycling, e-waste, HHW, paint, batteries, textiles, plastic film, propane tanks, scrap metal and grass.
Check the right time window. Main recycling and HHW hours are not the same.
Plan around a 3:45 PM gate cutoff. This is the safer cutoff based on the Town’s 2026 calendar and e-waste page.
Bring proof of residency. It is expressly required for HHW and bagged-grass drop-off and may be useful for resolving eligibility questions.
Check your vehicle. The current Town calendar says residential use only and no commercial vehicles.
Secure chemicals and batteries. Keep liquids upright and sealed; protect battery terminals and call first for damaged lithium batteries.
Erase electronics. Back up and remove personal information before recycling phones, computers or storage devices.
Empty propane tanks completely. Only empty tanks up to the Town’s listed 25-pound limit qualify for the propane program.
Bring grass payment if needed. The current price is $2 per bag with a five-bag limit.

The Simplest Way to Avoid a Rejected Huntington Drop-Off

Start by separating ordinary recycling from e-waste, household hazardous waste, paint, batteries, textiles, plastic film, scrap metal, propane tanks and grass. Then check the specific program instead of assuming the center handles every material under the same hours and rules.

Use the 641 New York Avenue address, arrive well before 3:45 PM for ordinary recycling, use the 9 AM–3 PM window for household hazardous waste, bring proof of residency where required and call first for unusual batteries, questionable commercial vehicles or materials not clearly listed by the Town.

Independent information guide. Recycling-Centre.org is not the Town of Huntington, the Huntington Department of Environmental Waste Management or the Town Recycling Center. Hours, gate times, holidays, fees, quantity limits, residency requirements, vehicle restrictions and accepted materials can change. Verify time-sensitive information directly with the Town of Huntington before loading materials or driving to 641 New York Avenue.
