What Miramar Recycling Center Handles
Miramar Recycling Center sits at the entrance to the Miramar Landfill complex and handles several different kinds of recyclable material. Some items qualify for California Redemption Value refunds, some may receive scrap value, some are accepted without payment, and some require a recycling fee.
This is why “Is Miramar recycling free?” does not have one answer. The result depends on what you bring.
CRV refund materials
Qualifying beverage containers can receive the applicable California Redemption Value.
Donation-only recycling
Some electronics, containers, ferrous metals, mixed paper and residential cooking oil are accepted without payment to or from the customer.
Fee-based recycling
Certain appliances, tires and small computer or household electronics carry listed recycling fees.

Which Miramar Location Should You Use?
The most common Miramar mistake is using the wrong Convoy Street address. The three main services below are close together but serve different purposes.
| Address | Service | Use It For |
|---|---|---|
| 5165 Convoy St. | Miramar Recycling Center | CRV containers, cardboard, paper, scrap-value metals, listed donation-only materials and fee-based recycling. |
| 5180 Convoy St. | Miramar Landfill & Greenery | Refuse disposal, greenery, compost, mulch and landfill services. |
| 5161 Convoy St. | HHW Transfer Facility / Mattress Collection area | Appointment-only household hazardous waste and eligible mattresses or box springs. |

Electronics at Miramar
TVs, monitors, laptops and CPUs are listed as donation-only items. Smaller computer and household electronics in the 1-to-49-pound category, including printers, keyboards and mice, are listed separately as fee-based recycling.

CRV Refunds and Daily Limits
Miramar Recycling Center participates in California Redemption Value recycling for qualifying beverage containers. The City’s current page lists the following refund amounts and daily limits.
| CRV Rule | Current Listed Amount or Limit |
|---|---|
| Containers under 24 ounces | 5 cents |
| Containers 24 ounces or larger | 10 cents |
| Qualifying cartons | 25 cents |

California expanded CRV coverage beginning January 1, 2024 to include certain wine and distilled-spirit containers such as boxes, bladders, pouches and cartons. Check the container label and current California redemption rules if you are unsure whether an item qualifies.
Miramar Landfill and Greenery: Different Hours, Fees and Rules
Miramar Landfill and Greenery are associated with 5180 Convoy Street, not the 5165 recycling-center address. The City lists business hours Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and says the landfill and recycling complex is closed Sunday.
Landfill cutoff details
Self-dumping vehicles may be accepted until 4:30 p.m., while clean-fill dirt program trucks are not accepted after 4 p.m. The City’s fee page also says there are no hand unloads after 4 p.m.
Greenery loading
City personnel tractor loading is listed until 4:30 p.m., with fees applying.
Landfill disposal fees vary by vehicle, material, weight and where the waste was generated. The City also lists a $50 uncovered-load fee, so landfill loads should be secured before arrival.
Household Hazardous Waste at Miramar
City of San Diego residents can use the Household Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility at the Miramar Landfill entrance for eligible household hazardous waste. The permanent facility is associated with 5161 Convoy Street.
The City currently lists HHW appointments from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Drop-off is by appointment only and is free for eligible City of San Diego residents.
Common HHW examples
Paint, cleaners, motor oil, household batteries, pesticides, pool chemicals and mercury-containing devices can fall under household hazardous waste.
Bring proof of residency
The City asks for proof of City of San Diego residency, such as picture identification or a recent bill showing your name and address.
The City’s appointment system limits standard household hazardous waste transportation to no more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip. If you have more, cannot transport the material, do not know what the material is, or have industrial-grade chemicals, the City’s appointment form provides a request-for-help option.
- Book the appointment first. Do not drive to the HHW facility assuming walk-in service.
- Confirm City residency. Only eligible City of San Diego household waste is accepted through the resident program.
- Keep HHW accessible. The City asks residents to place hazardous material in the trunk or truck bed rather than the passenger cabin.
- Remain in the vehicle. Follow onsite personnel instructions during the appointment.
Make a City of San Diego HHW appointment or call Environmental Services at 858-694-7000.
Free Mattress and Box Spring Recycling at Miramar
The City accepts eligible mattresses and box springs for free at its Mattress Collection Site on the east side of the Miramar Landfill entrance at 5161 Convoy Street, next to the HHW facility.
Current mattress collection hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.. The site is closed Saturdays and Sundays.
| Accepted | Not Accepted |
|---|---|
| Eligible mattresses | Wet, heavily soiled, severely damaged or bedbug-infested mattresses |
| Eligible box springs | Mattress pads, toppers, pillows, cushions or loose bedding |
| Program-eligible units | Air mattresses, waterbeds, sofa-bed frames, camping beds and similar excluded products |
The mattress site is not the Miramar Recycling Center itself, so do not rely on the recycling center’s Saturday hours for mattress drop-off.
2026 Tax Files Recycling Event: What Happened This Year
The City held the 2026 Tax Files Recycling Event at Miramar Recycling Center from April 16 through April 23, 2026, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with Sunday closed.
That 2026 event has already ended. It was limited to City of San Diego residents and accepted one banker’s box of tax files per resident. Paper files, folders and envelopes were accepted, while plastic covers, binders, electronic media and hazardous materials had to be removed.
