Plan Your North Meck Recycling Drop-Off Before Loading the Car
North Mecklenburg is a full-service Mecklenburg County recycling and disposal center, not just a bottle-and-cardboard drop-off. Residents can bring many recyclable, bulky, hazardous, electronic and yard-waste items, but residency rules, construction restrictions, load separation and disposal fees can change how your visit works.
Three checks prevent most wasted trips

What North Mecklenburg Disposal and Recycling Center Does
North Mecklenburg is one of Mecklenburg County’s four full-service drop-off centers. Full-service means it handles ordinary recycling plus disposal streams that cannot go to the County’s smaller staffed or self-service recycling locations.
Regular and Enhanced Recycling
Residents can bring standard recyclable materials and several special recycling categories that should not go into a normal curbside cart.
Trash and Bulky Items
The facility accepts approved household trash, furniture, appliances and other bulky waste, but quantity and fee rules apply.
HHW, E-Waste and Yard Waste
Household hazardous waste, electronics and yard debris use designated facility areas and should be separated before arrival.
The County does not provide one countywide curbside pickup system. Household curbside collection is handled by Charlotte or the municipality where a resident lives. North Mecklenburg is a County-operated drop-off facility for residents who bring material themselves.

Do not use “open now” as the only check
Normal hours do not tell you whether a holiday, construction restriction, vehicle rule or item-specific limit affects your trip. Check the County facility page before hauling a large, paid, business or unusual load.
Who Can Use North Mecklenburg Recycling Center?
Mecklenburg County asks County residents to display a blue entry sticker when using full-service centers. The blue sticker is available at facility fee booths at no cost to eligible County residents.
Mecklenburg County residents
Bring a driver’s license or other proof showing that you live in Mecklenburg County. Staff may ask for proof when issuing or checking a resident sticker.
Residents outside Mecklenburg County
Out-of-county residents may buy an annual residential sticker for access to resident-style services. Without that sticker, an out-of-county visitor must pay for each entry, including an entry used only for recycling.
Resident access does not mean every disposal service is free
The County separates access status from disposal charges. Bulky waste, construction and demolition material, larger yard-waste loads and other fee-booth categories can still cost money even when the visitor is a Mecklenburg County resident.
North Mecklenburg Recycling Center Fees and Payment Rules
There is no single “North Meck recycling fee.” Charges depend on the material, load size, vehicle, residency and whether the transaction is residential or business-related.
| Load or Service | Current Planning Rule |
|---|---|
| Normal recyclable material | County residents generally use the recycling drop-off system under resident-access rules. |
| Household kitchen trash | Mecklenburg County residents may dispose of up to five bags per day without a disposal charge. |
| More than five household trash bags | Use the fee booth; charges apply. |
| Bulky waste | Residential and commercial disposal fees can apply. |
| Construction and demolition debris | Fee-booth rules apply; keep C&D separated from other material. |
| Yard waste | Small resident quantities may be free; larger loads use flat or weight-based charges. |
| Business/commercial transaction | Business/non-residential rates apply to qualifying transactions. |
| Out-of-county visitor without annual sticker | Payment is required for each entry, even when dropping recycling. |
Payment method
Mecklenburg County says its solid-waste facilities accept debit cards and most major credit cards except American Express. The County does not accept cash or checks for these fee transactions.
Business card or commercial vehicle can change the rate
The County says transactions made with a business credit card or from a business/commercial vehicle may be charged at the business/non-residential rate. Do not assume a load receives the residential rate solely because the driver personally lives in Mecklenburg County.
What You Can Bring to North Mecklenburg

Cardboard, Bottles, Cans, Paper and Plastic Recycling
Standard recycling is simpler than paid disposal, but correct preparation still matters. Mecklenburg County has expanded the types of plastic containers that can be recycled, so residents should follow the County’s current item list rather than relying only on the plastic resin number stamped on a container.
Keep these rules in mind
- Do not put normal drop-off recyclables inside plastic trash bags.
- Empty food and liquid from containers.
- Flatten cardboard where practical.
- Use only accepted container types.
- Keep special items such as plastic film, batteries and foam in their dedicated drop-off streams.
Plastic bags and wrap have a special drop-off route
Mecklenburg County accepts qualifying plastic bags and stretchy film at its full-service centers, including North Mecklenburg. These materials should not be put into curbside recycling carts.
TVs, Computers, Electronics and Rechargeable Batteries
Mecklenburg County’s electronics program is primarily intended for residential electronic waste. North Mecklenburg is one of the County’s listed electronic-waste drop-off locations.
Examples of accepted electronics
- Laptops, desktops and tablets
- Monitors and televisions
- Printers and scanners
- Cords and cables
- Keyboards and mice
- Telephones
- Stereos and radios
- Gaming consoles and controllers
Before recycling a device
- Back up files you need.
- Sign out of linked accounts.
- Remove SIM and memory cards you want to retain.
- Factory-reset devices when practical.
- Remove batteries where the device allows safe removal.
Rechargeable batteries do not belong in trash or ordinary recycling
Lithium-ion and other rechargeable batteries can start fires in collection trucks and processing facilities. Take them directly to an approved full-service recycling center. If the battery cannot safely be removed, the County advises bringing the complete electronic device.
For broader electronics planning, see the site’s electronic recycling center guide.
Household Hazardous Waste at North Mecklenburg
North Mecklenburg accepts eligible household hazardous waste from residents. This service is for residential household material; businesses, schools, churches and other commercial/institutional generators cannot use the residential HHW stream for their hazardous waste.
Common HHW examples
- Paint and paint solvents
- Gasoline
- Motor oil and transmission fluid
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Pool chemicals
- Mercury-containing household items
- Adhesives and solvents
- Small propane tanks within County limits
Pack chemicals safely
- Use original containers when possible.
- Label contents clearly.
- Do not mix unknown chemicals.
- Check containers for leaks.
- Keep material away from heat.
- Pack containers upright in a sturdy box.
Items not accepted through normal residential HHW
The County lists ammunition, explosives, radioactive materials, bio-infectious material, pharmaceuticals and pressurized gas cylinders over its stated limit among materials that require another route.
Yard Waste, Brush, Leaves and Tree Material
North Mecklenburg accepts residential yard waste under Mecklenburg County’s current full-service-center rules. Load size affects whether the trip is free, a flat charge, or weighed.
| Resident Yard-Waste Load | Current County Fee Guidance |
|---|---|
| Less than five 32-gallon trash bags or six Kraft paper bags | No charge |
| More than five 32-gallon bags, with load not piled over two feet | $8 per unit under current County yard-waste schedule |
| Built-up sides, load over 3 cubic yards, larger logs or trailer over 8 feet | Weighed; current County schedule lists $40/ton with a $16 minimum |
Accepted yard-waste examples include leaves, grass clippings, brush, short untreated pallets, limbs, bamboo and small root balls. North Mecklenburg’s tree-diameter limit is currently listed at 24 inches.
Construction affects wood-waste recycling
Do not confuse ordinary yard debris with the County’s enhanced clean-wood recycling program. Current County enhanced-recycling guidance says North Mecklenburg cannot accept wood waste through that program during construction.
Furniture, Appliances, C&D Debris and Trailer Limits
North Mecklenburg can accept approved bulky waste and construction/demolition material, but these categories should be separated before arrival and may carry residential or business disposal fees.
Bulky waste
Furniture and other bulky household items can use the full-service route. Keep bulky material separate from yard debris and C&D.
White goods
County full-service centers accept listed appliances such as stoves, empty refrigerators/freezers, washers, dryers and water heaters.
Construction debris
Construction and demolition loads use fee rules and should not be mixed with yard debris or ordinary bulky trash.
Trailer rules
- Trailers longer than 8 feet must be weighed or measured to calculate disposal fees.
- North Mecklenburg accepts trailers up to 12 feet long for bulky and C&D waste under the general County trailer rules.
- Vehicles or trailers above the North Meck size limit may be redirected to another County facility.
- Construction-related Saturday restrictions may be stricter than the general trailer-size rule.
Separate the load before you leave home
Mecklenburg County says mixed yard waste, construction/demolition debris and bulky trash loads are not accepted as ordinary separated loads. Mixed material can be charged at the C&D rate or require re-sorting.
North Meck Construction and Saturday Restrictions
Mecklenburg County is carrying out site-expansion improvements at North Mecklenburg, including a covered acceptance area, new pavement, a noise wall and more operating space.
A County notice introduced a construction-related restriction beginning February 1, 2025: business/non-residential loads and dump trailers were no longer accepted on Saturdays at North Meck because of construction congestion. The County instructed those customers to use North Meck Monday through Friday or another full-service center.
Because construction conditions can evolve, verify the latest facility notice before relying on that restriction for a future Saturday. Current 2026 County pages still show construction-related service impacts, including suspension of North Meck wood-waste recycling and limited mulch/compost availability.
Mulch and compost are also affected
Current County material-sales information says North Meck does not have normal mulch and compost availability during construction. Do not drive there specifically to buy or collect mulch without checking the current notice first.
Other Mecklenburg County Full-Service Centers
If a material, trailer, construction restriction or location makes North Mecklenburg unsuitable, Mecklenburg County operates three other full-service recycling and disposal centers.
| Center | Address | Useful Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Compost Central | 140 Valleydale Road, Charlotte, NC 28214 | Full-service center; County directs compost purchases above 10 cubic yards here. |
| Hickory Grove | 8007 Pence Road, Charlotte, NC 28215 | Full-service east-side alternative; useful when North Meck construction restricts an item. |
| Foxhole | 17131 Lancaster Highway, Charlotte, NC 28277 | Full-service center plus a separate landfill operation for certain larger loads. |
For an overview of Mecklenburg County facilities, see the site’s Charlotte recycling center guide.
Before You Drive to North Mecklenburg: 9-Step Checklist
Confirm the facility is the right type
North Meck is a full-service County center. A smaller staffed or self-service recycling location may not accept trash, HHW, yard waste or bulky material.
Verify today’s operating status
Check the official facility and holiday pages rather than relying only on map-app hours.
Check residency requirements
Bring proof of Mecklenburg County residence if you need a blue resident entry sticker.
Identify every material category
Separate regular recycling, HHW, electronics, yard debris, bulky waste and C&D before loading.
Check item limits
TVs, monitors, tires, mattresses, hazardous liquids and other special materials can have quantity limits.
Measure the trailer
Trailers over 8 feet trigger measurement or weighing rules, and North Meck’s general bulky/C&D trailer ceiling is 12 feet.
Check construction restrictions
This is especially important for Saturday business loads, dump trailers, wood waste and mulch/compost trips.
Bring an accepted payment card
County fee booths do not accept cash or checks. American Express is also excluded from the listed payment options.
Call when the load is unusual
Use Mecklenburg County Solid Waste’s recorded information line at 980-314-3867 or verify through Wipe Out Waste before hauling questionable material.
