Chattanooga Recycling Center: Hours, Locations & Accepted Items

Chattanooga TN · 5 City Centers · Hamilton County Residents

Plan a Chattanooga Recycling Trip Without Driving to the Wrong Facility

Chattanooga’s recycling system includes five City recycle centers, curbside recycling, a separate household hazardous-waste facility, three refuse centers, the Wood Recycling Center, Hamilton County-operated recycling sites, compost kiosks and special glass and hard-to-recycle-plastic programs.

The fastest way to avoid a wasted trip is to identify the material first. Glass, cardboard, #1/#2 plastics and cans can use normal recycling; paint, chemicals, brush, mattresses, tires, TVs and difficult plastics can require completely different routes.

Fast answer: Chattanooga recycle-center hours and locations

Hamilton County residents may use Chattanooga’s five City recycle centers. The regular schedule is Tuesday–Friday 10:00 AM–6:00 PM, Saturday 9:00 AM–6:00 PM and Sunday 1:00 PM–5:00 PM. The centers are closed Mondays and listed City holidays.

The five official addresses are 5955 Brainerd Road, 1250 E. 3rd Street, 3189 Cummings Hwy, 8004 Batters Place Road and 4504 N. Access Road.

Accepted normal drop-off materials include aluminum cans, newspaper, cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic containers, computer electronics, steel cans, glass, mixed paper and cooking oil—with one major exception: Batters Place Road does not accept cooking oil.

Important 2026 updates

Food-scrap composting: after Chattanooga’s pilot period, free NewTerra compost drop-off is now available to Chattanooga residents through kiosks at all five City recycling centers. Registration with NewTerra is required, businesses are not eligible and food scraps must go into the dedicated kiosk system—not ordinary City recycling bins.

Curbside glass: Chattanooga renewed its separate curbside glass pilot for an additional year beginning July 1, 2026 in selected neighborhoods. This does not mean glass belongs inside the normal curbside recycling cart.

Hard-to-recycle plastics: Chattanooga participates in the Hefty ReNew orange-bag program. This is separate from normal loose recycling, where the City still lists only #1 and #2 plastic containers. Hefty says orange-bag collection is scheduled to continue through June 30, 2027 while distribution of new bags is being phased out by the end of 2026.

Five Official City of Chattanooga Recycling Centers

These are the five City-operated recycling drop-off locations listed by Chattanooga Public Works. Hamilton County residents are allowed to use them.

Location Best Planning Use Important Note
5955 Brainerd Road East / southeast Chattanooga drop-off Accepts the normal City-listed recycling streams.
1250 E. 3rd Street Central Chattanooga / downtown-side access Do not leave bulky trash or HHW in normal recycling areas.
3189 Cummings Hwy Lookout Valley / west-side trips Check holiday status before driving.
8004 Batters Place Road East Brainerd-area drop-off Cooking oil is not accepted here.
4504 N. Access Road North-side / Hixson-area access Keep plastic bags, food and Styrofoam out.
Do not confuse 4504 N. Access Road with the refuse center at 4500 North Access Road. They serve different purposes even though the addresses are very close.

Chattanooga Recycle Center Hours and Holiday Closures

Day Regular Hours Planning Note
Monday Closed Use Tuesday or another correct service route.
Tuesday 10:00 AM–6:00 PM Normal City drop-off day.
Wednesday 10:00 AM–6:00 PM Normal City drop-off day.
Thursday 10:00 AM–6:00 PM Normal City drop-off day.
Friday 10:00 AM–6:00 PM Normal City drop-off day.
Saturday 9:00 AM–6:00 PM Long weekend window; arrive sorted.
Sunday 1:00 PM–5:00 PM Shorter operating day.

Listed holiday closures

The City lists closures for New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Good Friday, Easter, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, the Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

For the remainder of 2026 after September 29, the most relevant listed closures are Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, the Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Do not rely only on a map app’s “open now” label during holiday weeks. Check Chattanooga.gov because municipal holiday closures can override normal Tuesday–Sunday hours.

Accepted Materials at Chattanooga Recycle Centers

The City’s current normal drop-off list is narrower than many people expect.

Material Accepted? Preparation
Aluminum cans Yes Empty and reasonably clean.
Steel cans Yes Rinse food containers.
Newspaper Yes Keep dry.
Mixed paper Yes Keep dry and free of food contamination.
Cardboard Yes Flatten and remove packing material.
Plastic #1 and #2 containers Yes Rinse food containers; normal loose recycling does not extend to every numbered plastic.
Glass Yes Drop-off route is important because glass is not accepted inside the normal curbside recycle cart.
Computer electronics Yes Back up and wipe personal data when applicable.
Cooking oil Yes, except Batters Place Use a secure container and keep it separate from motor oil or chemicals.

Items Not Accepted in Normal Chattanooga Recycling

Plastic bags

Plastic bags are not accepted in normal City drop-off recycling and should not be used to bag ordinary recyclables.

Styrofoam

Do not put Styrofoam into the normal drop-off stream. Some hard-to-recycle plastic items may qualify for the separate Hefty ReNew program.

Televisions

TVs are specifically listed as not accepted at normal recycle centers.

Non-computer electronics

DVD players, VCRs and other non-computer electronics are excluded from the regular center list.

Fluorescent bulbs

Use the Household Hazardous Waste route rather than normal recycling.

Food

Food does not belong in recycling bins. Registered Chattanooga residents can use dedicated NewTerra compost kiosks instead.

Yard waste

Brush, leaves and natural wood belong at the Wood Recycling Center or through the City brush service.

Large toys

Large toys are listed as non-acceptable normal recycling items.

Clothing

Clothes are excluded from regular recycling. Consider reuse/donation when appropriate or use the correct refuse route.

Glass Recycling in Chattanooga: Drop-Off vs Curbside Pilot

Glass is one of the easiest Chattanooga recycling rules to misunderstand.

Normal City recycling centers

Glass is accepted at the five City drop-off centers.

Normal curbside recycle cart

Glass is not accepted inside the regular curbside recycling container.

Separate curbside glass pilot

Beginning in 2025 Chattanooga launched a dedicated curbside glass pilot with Overlooked Materials. The City renewed that pilot for another year beginning July 1, 2026.

The pilot serves selected areas including Belvoir, Brainerd, Brainerd Hills, Missionary Ridge, Ridgedale and Highland Park. Enrolled residents receive dedicated instructions and containers.

A glass-pilot enrollment does not change the rule for the normal blue recycling cart. Use the dedicated glass-pilot system if enrolled; otherwise use a recycling-center glass drop-off.

Chattanooga Plastics #1–#7 and the Hefty ReNew Program

The normal City recycling rule remains simple: #1 and #2 plastic containers are accepted in the standard recycling stream when properly prepared.

Plastics #3–#7 should not simply be thrown loose into normal recycling. Chattanooga also participates in the separate Hefty ReNew orange-bag program for qualifying hard-to-recycle plastics.

Regular recycling

Use only accepted #1/#2 containers in the normal City stream. Rinse food containers and keep them loose.

Hefty ReNew

Qualifying hard-to-recycle plastics go into the program’s orange bags, not loose into the regular bin. Chattanooga’s five recycle-center addresses have been used as participating drop-off locations.

2026 phase-out note: Hefty says retailer distribution of ReNew orange bags will be discontinued by the end of 2026, while collection of program materials will continue through June 30, 2027. Check the current Hefty community page before buying bags or planning a trip.

Food-Scrap Compost Kiosks at All Five Recycling Centers

Chattanooga now offers free food-scrap compost drop-off to City residents through NewTerra kiosks, including kiosks at all five City recycling centers.

How it works

  1. Register with NewTerra. Participation is voluntary and requires enrollment.
  2. Wait for program instructions. NewTerra provides education and participation details.
  3. Use a dedicated compost kiosk. Do not put food scraps into general recycling bins.
  4. Residential use only. Businesses are not eligible for the City-supported kiosk program.
2026 program status: the City announced in August 2026 that free kiosk composting is now available to all Chattanooga residents after the earlier pilot diverted nearly 98,000 pounds of food waste.

Chattanooga Curbside Recycling vs Drop-Off Centers

The City provides biweekly curbside recycling to eligible households and businesses. Recycle containers are listed as free of charge.

Important curbside rules

  • Place the cart curbside by 7:00 AM to ensure service.
  • Do not place recycling on the ground or on top of the cart.
  • The lid must close completely.
  • Do not overfill the cart.
  • Do not bag normal recyclables.
  • Break down cardboard boxes.
  • Remove food residue before recycling.
  • Residential locations may have up to two recycling containers.
  • Businesses are allowed one recycling container under the current City guidance.
  • Sign up online or call 311 / 423-643-6311.
Material Regular Curbside Cart City Drop-Off Center
Paper / cardboard Yes Yes
#1/#2 plastic containers Yes Yes
Steel / aluminum cans Yes Yes
Glass No, except separate enrolled glass pilot Yes
Plastic bags No No in normal stream
Food scraps No in recycling cart Dedicated registered compost kiosk only
Aerosol cans No Check appropriate special route

Computer Electronics, TVs and Other Electronics

Chattanooga’s normal City recycle-center list accepts computer electronics, but it specifically excludes televisions and non-computer electronics such as DVD players and VCRs.

Before surrendering a computer

  1. Back up files you need.
  2. Sign out of important accounts.
  3. Remove SIM cards, SD cards and removable storage.
  4. Factory reset or wipe storage when appropriate.
  5. Do not assume a normal drop-off service automatically performs certified data destruction.
TVs are not normal recycle-center items. City bulky-trash collection can accept TVs from eligible City households, while computer-related electronics also appear on the HHW facility’s accepted list. Call 311 when the exact electronic item does not fit a published category.

For device-specific preparation, see the electronic recycling center guide.

Chattanooga Household Hazardous Waste Facility

Paint thinner, pesticides, gasoline, motor oil, batteries, fluorescent lamps and similar hazardous materials should not be left at a normal recycle center.

Transport hazardous material safely

  • Keep products sealed in original containers when possible.
  • Store and transport containers upright.
  • Keep chemicals away from children, pets, food and heat sources.
  • Secure containers so they cannot tip.
  • For a leaking container, the City advises placing it in a sturdy sealed outer container of no more than five gallons with absorbent material such as cat litter or crumpled newspaper.
  • The City recommends transporting material in the vehicle trunk where possible.

Hamilton County Recycling Centers Are a Separate Network

Chattanooga’s five City centers are not the only recycling facilities in Hamilton County. The County Recycling Department operates additional centers with different hours.

The Hamilton County Recycling Office itself does not accept public recycling. Use one of the public centers below.
County Center Address Current Hours

The City lists check, credit card and money order as payment methods and says no cash or coin.

Where Chattanooga Recyclables Go After Drop-Off

The City says its recyclables are delivered to a Materials Recovery Facility for processing and identifies WestRock as the MRF.

After sorting and baling, materials are sent into different commodity markets. Chattanooga currently identifies examples including:

  • Steel: Gerdau
  • Aluminum: Service Aluminum
  • Paper and cardboard: WestRock facilities
  • Glass from recycling centers: Strategic Materials in Atlanta
  • #1/#2 plastics: processors including Mohawk Flooring and KW Plastics
This is why contamination matters: food, bags, Styrofoam, wrong electronics and other non-accepted items can interfere with sorting and reduce the value of recyclable material.

Before-You-Go Chattanooga Recycling Checklist

  1. Confirm the material first. Normal recycling, HHW, wood, bulky trash and tires use different facilities.
  2. Check the day. City recycle centers are closed Mondays.
  3. Check holiday status. Municipal holidays can override normal hours.
  4. Choose the correct address. Chattanooga has five City recycle centers plus separate County centers.
  5. Rinse #1/#2 food containers and steel cans.
  6. Flatten cardboard and keep paper dry.
  7. Do not bag ordinary recyclables.
  8. Keep glass out of the normal curbside cart. Use drop-off or the dedicated glass pilot if enrolled.
  9. Do not throw plastics #3–#7 loose into normal recycling. Check Hefty ReNew eligibility instead.
  10. Remember Batters Place does not accept cooking oil.
  11. Use HHW for oil-based paint, gasoline, chemicals, pesticides, batteries and fluorescent lamps.
  12. Keep latex/acrylic paint out of the HHW facility.
  13. Use Wood Recycling for natural wood, brush and leaves.
  14. Use refuse centers for eligible mattresses, furniture and bulky household items.
  15. Use the County Tire Recovery Center for tire-specific recycling and call first.
  16. Protect data before recycling computers.
  17. Call 311 or 423-643-6311 if an item does not clearly fit a published category.

Chattanooga Recycling Center Map

Because Chattanooga operates five City recycling centers, the map below uses a broad City recycling search rather than pretending there is one single “Chattanooga Recycling Center.”

Map listings are for directions, not waste eligibility. Always use Chattanooga.gov or Hamilton County’s recycling page to confirm whether your material belongs at that exact facility.
