The SWA operates seven Home Chemical & Recycling Centers across Palm Beach County. Six are paired with SWA transfer stations, while the West Palm Beach HCRC at 6161 N Jog Road is a standalone HCRC on the SWA campus.
Palm Beach County residents can drop off accepted household hazardous waste at no charge. There is no curbside collection for HHW, so batteries, paints, fuels, household chemicals, fluorescent lamps and similar hazardous materials must be brought to an approved HCRC.

What an SWA Home Chemical & Recycling Center Is For
Home Chemical & Recycling Centers, usually shortened to HCRCs, are part of the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County’s hazardous-waste system. They are intended for materials that may be flammable, toxic, corrosive, reactive, mercury-containing, battery-powered or otherwise unsafe to mix with normal household garbage.

Lithium, rechargeable, automotive and marine batteries plus fluorescent and mercury-containing lamps.

HCRC does not mean general trash drop-off
Do not treat an HCRC as a public dump. Garbage, tires, pharmaceuticals, sharps, medical waste, radioactive waste and several other categories are specifically outside the standard household HCRC program.

Choose the closest HCRC unless you need a special service
Normal accepted household hazardous waste can go to any HCRC. Gasoline container-return service is different: it is available only at the West Palm Beach and Western Delray Beach locations during specified weekday hours.
HCRC Hours, Full-Service Locations and Self-Service Centers
SWA describes two HCRCs as full-service facilities and the remaining five as self-service. The full-service centers are important when your material needs staff assistance or when a specific SWA program requires that location.

Other HCRCs
Jupiter, Royal Palm Beach, Lantana, Belle Glade and Eastern Delray are listed as self-service HCRC locations.
Do not assume every location follows identical hours. Lantana has shorter Saturday hours, and Belle Glade’s official facility page lists weekday-only service.

SWA Quantity Limits You Should Check Before Driving
Household HCRC service is free for Palm Beach County residents, but free does not mean unlimited. SWA publishes specific quantity limits for gasoline, oil and fluorescent bulbs and asks users with larger or unusual loads to call first.

Gasoline Drop-Off and Gas-Container Return Rules
Gasoline can be dropped off at any SWA HCRC. The important difference is whether you want the emptied fuel container returned to you.
Any SWA HCRC
Residents can use the county HCRC network for accepted gasoline within the published quantity limits.
Only 2 Locations
Empty gasoline-container return is listed only at West Palm Beach and Western Delray Beach, Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 5 PM.
Do not choose a Saturday visit if you need the gas container returned
The container-return service is specifically tied to the two full-service locations during weekday service hours.
Batteries and Electronics at SWA HCRCs
SWA accepts lithium, button, rechargeable, automotive and marine batteries. These should not be confused with ordinary alkaline batteries, which SWA says may be placed in household garbage.
Electric Vehicle Batteries Are Different
EV batteries are not accepted at SWA facilities. SWA directs residents to the vehicle dealer or manufacturer for proper handling.
Electronics
Electronics are accepted through the HCRC program. Before giving up a computer, phone, tablet or storage device, back up anything you need and remove personal information where practical.

Paint, Pool Chemicals, Pesticides and Household Cleaners
SWA’s accepted list includes paints, stains, glues, solvents, pesticides, fertilizers, photo chemicals, pool chemicals, household cleaners and non-empty aerosol cans. These materials should use the hazardous-waste route instead of normal curbside recycling.
Keep different chemicals separate during transport
Do not pour products together to save containers. Combining incompatible chemicals can create dangerous reactions. Keep containers upright and secured so they do not tip or leak during the trip.

Small Business Hazardous Waste: VSQG Rules Are Different
Residential household hazardous waste drop-off and business hazardous-waste disposal are not the same service. A small business or nonprofit may qualify for SWA’s Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG) program, but it must follow the program process and pay applicable disposal fees.

The organization must qualify as a Very Small Quantity Generator, and the business or generated waste must be tied to Palm Beach County.
Submit the required registration
SWA requires qualifying businesses to register rather than arrive under the residential program.
Schedule an approved drop-off

Pay the applicable disposal fee
Business hazardous-waste service is fee-based, with charges depending on the materials delivered.
Transport the material yourself

Do not send business waste through resident drop-off

Choose the correct HCRC
Use the nearest HCRC for normal accepted household hazardous waste, but choose West Palm Beach or Western Delray Beach when you need weekday gasoline-container return service.
Check the individual facility hours
Do not assume all seven locations have identical schedules. Lantana and Belle Glade have different hours from the more common HCRC schedule.
Check your quantity
Compare gasoline, oil and fluorescent-lamp amounts with SWA’s published limits before loading the vehicle.
Keep products separate
Do not mix chemicals together. Keep containers upright and close lids securely.
