Motor Oil, Cooking Oil, Batteries, Mattresses and Other Household Items

Cooking oil

5 gallons or less per visit

The City’s Recycling Center page currently lists cooking oil acceptance at five gallons or less per visit.

Motor oil

8 gallons per day

Motor oil is limited to eight gallons per day per customer or vehicle.

Motor-oil container requirements

Containers must have an attached pourable spout, be completely closed with sealed caps or plugs, and cannot exceed 16 quarts in capacity.

Batteries

The Recycling Center lists both household batteries and auto/truck batteries. Battery chemistry matters, so call if you have a damaged lithium battery, e-bike battery, unusually large battery or a commercial quantity.

Mattresses and box springs

Mattresses and box springs are currently $29 each. The City says units infested with bed bugs or rodents are not accepted.

Car seats

The current City Recycling Center page lists car seats as accepted free.

Household Hazardous Waste: Use Larimer County for Chemicals and Paint

Loveland’s normal Recycling Center accepts some special materials such as motor oil, cooking oil and batteries, but many hazardous household products should be taken to Larimer County Household Hazardous Waste.

Larimer County Household Hazardous Waste

5887 S. Taft Hill Road, Fort Collins, CO 80526.

Current public hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. The facility is closed to the public Wednesday because Wednesdays are reserved for business-waste appointments.

Typical residential HHW is accepted free from Larimer County residents.

County residential limits

  • Maximum 30 gallons per vehicle, measured by container size.
  • Containers larger than 5 gallons are not accepted.
  • Up to 10 fluorescent bulbs per visit.
  • Keep chemicals in labeled, non-leaking containers.
  • Original containers are preferred where possible.
  • Pack containers upright in boxes rather than loose in trash bags.

Examples accepted by Larimer County HHW

Paint, aerosols, antifreeze, automotive fluids, household cleaners, gasoline, glue, pesticides, pool chemicals, stains, solvents, mercury devices, CFLs, fluorescent bulbs, certain batteries, small propane tanks and properly contained residential sharps are among the County-listed categories.

Electronics use a different Larimer County route

Larimer County HHW does not accept electronics through its normal residential HHW program. Electronics should use an electronics-recycling route such as the City of Loveland Recycling Center or Larimer County electronics recycling.

See our household hazardous waste recycling guide for additional load-preparation help.

Loveland Household Cleanup Program

Loveland residents who currently pay the monthly Solid Waste Programs fee are eligible for the City’s Household Cleanup Program. The program is designed for larger household items that do not fit normal carts.

Voucher rules

  • The voucher is valid for one year.
  • It can be used only once during that year.
  • The voucher itself has no cash value.
  • Loads are limited to a standard pickup-load equivalent, up to approximately 2.7 cubic yards.
  • Oversized loads are not accepted.
  • Household trash should be bagged rather than loose.
  • Recyclables must be separated from cleanup waste.

Items the voucher does not cover

The program is not valid for hazardous waste and specifically excludes categories including computers, televisions, tires, mattresses, electronic equipment, paint, CFLs, cleaning products, asbestos-containing material, solvents, acids, degreasers, pesticides and adhesives.

Fee-based items stay fee-based

A Household Cleanup voucher does not erase normal charges on items that already carry a Recycling Center fee.

Concrete Drop-Off Limits

Loveland accepts limited concrete at the Recycling Center, but the material must meet strict preparation requirements.

  • Concrete pieces must be 30 inches or smaller.
  • Total load cannot exceed 2.5 cubic yards, roughly a standard pickup-truck bed.
  • No rebar.
  • No wood pieces or posts.
  • No reinforcement material.
  • No dirt.
  • No household trash mixed with the concrete.

If the load contains mixed demolition material rather than clean concrete, call before leaving home because it may require another disposal route.

Glass, Cardboard, Paper, Plastics and Metal Recycling Rules

Glass

Glass bottles and jars of all colors are accepted but must be sorted. Rinse containers and remove caps and lids. Do not mix in ceramics, bakeware, Pyrex, drinking glasses, auto glass, plate glass, mirrors or light bulbs.

Cardboard

Corrugated cardboard must be flattened and cut to fit through the City’s 3-foot-wide by 6-inch-tall opening. Oversized sheets can clog the compactor hopper.

See our cardboard recycling center guide for large-load preparation help.

Paper

The center lists mixed office paper, shredded paper, magazines and newspaper. The site has separate paper bins; white paper should go into the white-paper bin rather than being mixed with colored paper or envelopes containing plastic windows.

Plastic

The center lists commingled plastic containers, plastic grocery bags, newspaper bags, dry-cleaning bags and #2 plant containers. Landscape plastic, new mattress covers, feed bags and shrink wrap are specifically excluded from the listed film-plastic category.

Aluminum and other metal cans

Aluminum cans and foil are accepted. Steel and tin cans are collected separately. Containers should be empty before recycling.

Mulch and Compost Available at the Recycling Center

The current City fee sheet also lists processed yard-waste products for purchase.

Product Current published price
Ground branch and log mulch $8.50 per cubic yard
Organic compost $50 per cubic yard, sold in ¼-cubic-yard increments
10-cubic-yard delivery $35 delivery fee
20- or 30-cubic-yard delivery $50 delivery fee

Inventory and delivery availability can change, so call the Recycling Center before making a dedicated mulch or compost trip.

Waste Wizard, Recycling Reminders and Curbside Alternatives

The City provides item-search and collection-reminder tools so residents can check an unfamiliar material before putting it in a cart or driving to Wilson Avenue.

Item lookup

Waste Wizard

Use the City’s item-search tool when you are unsure whether something belongs in curbside recycling, the Recycling Center, household cleanup or another disposal program.

Collection reminders

Loveland Recycling and Trash tools

Use City collection reminders for trash, recycling and seasonal yard-waste cart service rather than relying on memory around holidays.

Residents who prefer curbside recycling or yard-waste carts can call Public Works at 970-962-2529.

Before-You-Go Checklist for the Loveland Recycling Center

  1. Check the day. The center is closed every Monday and on listed City holidays.
  2. Identify the material. Separate ordinary recyclables, yard debris, electronics, appliances, oil, batteries, mattresses, tires and concrete.
  3. Secure the load. Cover or strap loose material to avoid the current $10 unsecured-load charge.
  4. Bring your Yard Waste Permit when applicable. City residents need it for eligible permit-based organics and clean lumber drop-off.
  5. Flatten cardboard before leaving. It must fit the City’s 3-foot by 6-inch hopper opening.
  6. Prepare wood correctly. Keep paint, stain, laminate, furniture and root balls out of the clean raw-wood stream.
  7. Check electronics fees. TV and monitor pricing depends on screen type and diagonal measurement.
  8. Check tire type and rim status. Rates differ by tire category and rims increase several fees.
  9. Use safe oil containers. Follow the City’s motor-oil quantity, spout, cap and container-size requirements.
  10. Keep hazardous chemicals separate. Do not mix household chemicals with normal Recycling Center material.
  11. Call before an unusual load. Use 970-962-2529 for questions about large, mixed, commercial or difficult-to-classify material.
