Owasso Plastic Recycling Rules
The City’s 24-hour recycling area currently lists plastic resin types #1, #2 and #5. Do not assume every plastic item bearing one of those numbers belongs in the recycling bins.
Plastic bags are specifically excluded, even when the bag material itself carries a #1, #2 or #5 code. The City advises taking plastic shopping and sandwich bags to participating grocery-store recycling programs instead.
Used Motor Oil, Antifreeze, Grease and Hydraulic Fluid
The staffed Disposal Station accepts used motor oil, antifreeze, grease and hydraulic fluid. Brake fluid is specifically excluded.
- Keep each fluid in a separate secure container.
- Do not mix oil with gasoline, solvents, antifreeze or unknown liquids.
- Transport containers upright.
- Bring these materials only during staffed Disposal Station hours.
- Ask staff where each fluid should be placed before unloading.
Batteries and Fluorescent Bulbs
The staffed Disposal Station accepts lead-acid batteries and rechargeable batteries. The City’s not-accepted list specifically excludes alkaline batteries.
Fluorescent light bulbs of all types are listed as accepted at the staffed station. Keep bulbs protected from breakage during transport.
Battery Preparation
- Keep battery types separated.
- Do not place rechargeable or lead-acid batteries in ordinary recycling bins.
- Protect exposed terminals where appropriate.
- Tell staff if a battery is damaged, leaking or swollen before handling it further.
Passenger Tires and Scrap Metal
The Disposal Station accepts passenger tires, but the City specifies no rims. Separate the tire from the wheel before making the trip.
Scrap metal is also accepted. For oversized metal, unusual equipment, commercial quantities or items containing liquids, refrigerants or pressurized components, call the facility first at 918-272-4991.
Household Chemicals and Hazardous Waste
Owasso does not direct residents to leave pesticides, household chemicals, gasoline, oil-based paint or similar hazardous products at the regular Recycle Center.
The City participates in the Metropolitan Environmental Trust system, which allows Owasso residents to use the Tulsa Household Pollutant Collection Facility at 4502 S Galveston Avenue, Tulsa.
Facility Hours
The City currently lists the Tulsa Household Pollutant Collection Facility as open Wednesday and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Owasso Voucher
Owasso residents can contact MET at 918-584-0584 for a voucher covering the first 45 pounds per visit. The City says residents may receive two vouchers per year.
The City’s current page lists a charge of $1.37 per pound for weight above the voucher allowance.
Yard Waste Does Not Go in the Recycling Center
Leaves, limbs, mulch, root balls, grass and other yard waste are specifically listed as not accepted at the regular Recycling Center & Disposal Station.
Owasso Curbside Yard-Waste Service
The City operates a separate seasonal yard-waste collection program. Current City information says yard waste must be separated from regular refuse during the active collection season and placed in approved clear compost bags or City-issued red yard-waste carts.
Approved clear bags are currently listed at $9 for a package of 10, plus applicable sales tax. The City’s refuse rules state that approved bags are available at City Hall, the Recycling Center and Owasso QuikTrip locations.
Brush Bundles
For curbside yard-waste service, brush must be tied into bundles no larger than 4 feet long and 2 feet in diameter and handled according to the City’s yard-waste rules.
Tulsa Mulch Site Alternative
Owasso residents can also use the City of Tulsa Mulch Site at 2100 N 145th E Avenue through its commercial entrance. The current Owasso recycling page lists a fee of $15.84 per 3-cubic-yard pickup-truck load for Owasso residents after June 1, 2025.
The Owasso page currently lists commercial-gate hours as Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with Wednesday and Sunday closed to Owasso residents.
2026 Holiday and Special-Date Notes
The City’s published 2026 refuse schedule separates the 24-hour recycling area from the staffed Convenience/Disposal Station. The document says the 24-hour Recycle Center remains open while the staffed drop-off can close for designated City holidays.
| 2026 Date | Staffed Drop-Off | 24-Hour Recycle Area |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving — Nov. 26–27 | Closed | City schedule says it remains open |
| Christmas Eve — Dec. 24 | Closed | City schedule says it remains open |
| Christmas Day — Dec. 25 | Closed | City schedule says it remains open |
The City’s 2026 calendar also listed spring and fall Free Landfill Days and a September household waste collection/recycling event. Those 2026 event dates have already passed, so check the City website for newly announced future events rather than relying on an expired event date.
