Columbia Recycling Drop-Off Update: Centers Closed, Current Alternatives Explained
Columbia’s municipal recycling drop-off centers are currently closed until further notice. Residents should not drive to a former recycling drop-off site expecting an active recycling dumpster. Weekly curbside recycling is operating again, while yard waste, household hazardous waste and landfill disposal use separate active services.
Recycling Drop-Off Status
City of Columbia municipal drop-off locations
Current Answer: Do Not Drive to a Columbia Recycling Drop-Off Center
Columbia’s public recycling drop-off centers remain closed for the foreseeable future. The closure followed severe damage to the City’s Material Recovery Facility in April 2025. The City continues working on replacement and diversion options.
If you receive City residential curbside service, weekly recycling collection is operating again. Yard waste can still use the Capen Park or Parkside Drive yard-waste centers, qualifying hazardous household chemicals can use scheduled HHW collection days, and disposal loads can use the Bioreactor Landfill when appropriate.

Why Columbia’s Recycling Drop-Off Centers Are Closed
The City’s former Material Recovery Facility at 5700 Peabody Road was severely damaged by a tornado in April 2025. The facility had been used to sort and bale recyclable materials from City collection programs and public recycling drop-off locations.
The City subsequently closed the recycling drop-off centers and has continued evaluating options for a replacement facility and other ways to divert material from the landfill.
The closure is still current in 2026
The City’s current Solid Waste Utility and Recycling Drop-Off Centers pages continue to state that the drop-off centers are closed until further notice. Do not rely on an old map listing, historical photo or previously published location list as proof that a recycling dumpster is available today.
Former Columbia Recycling Drop-Off Locations Are Not Active Drop-Off Options Right Now
The City still lists its historical drop-off locations for reference, but its current notice says the recycling drop-off centers remain closed. These addresses should therefore be treated as closed recycling locations, not active destinations.
| Former drop-off area | Location detail | Current recycling status |
|---|---|---|
| Columbia College | Dulany Hall near 8th Street and Hickman Avenue | Closed until further notice |
| Columbia College | Near 7th Street and Hickman Avenue | Closed until further notice |
| Downtown | The Armory area along Park Avenue between 7th and 8th Street | Closed until further notice |
| Downtown | South side of 10th & Cherry Parking Garage | Closed until further notice |
| South Providence | 3601 S Providence Road on the outer road | Closed until further notice |
| State Farm Parkway | Near Grindstone north of E. Nifong Boulevard | Closed until further notice |
| Cosmo Park | Parks Management Center, 1403 Business Loop 70 W | Closed until further notice |
| University of Missouri | East Campus Plant Growth Facility near East Campus Road and Ashland Road | Closed until further notice |
Do not leave recycling at a closed site
If a former City recycling location has no active collection container, do not leave cardboard, bags, glass or other materials beside the site. Use the current City service that matches your item.
What Columbia Residents Should Use Instead
Curbside Recycling
City residential curbside customers can use the current weekly recycling program on their regular refuse collection day.
Yard Waste Centers
Use Capen Park or Parkside Drive for qualifying residential yard waste.
HHW Collection
Use scheduled household hazardous-waste collection days at 1313 Lakeview.
Bioreactor Landfill
Use the landfill for qualifying non-hazardous disposal loads when curbside or another City program is not appropriate.
Columbia Residential Curbside Recycling Is Operating Again
The City resumed weekly residential curbside recycling in June 2026. Recycling is collected on the customer’s regularly scheduled refuse collection day.
Columbia uses blue recycling bags for accepted mixed containers. Mixed fibers such as cardboard, newspaper and office paper should be kept separate and bundled in a box or paper bag according to the City’s current instructions.
Mixed fibers are being diverted again
The City reported in January 2026 that it had resumed baling and selling mixed-fiber material after the 2025 facility loss. That means clean cardboard and paper collected through the current program are again being directed into a recycling market rather than simply treated as ordinary refuse.
What Columbia Residents Should Recycle Right Now
Because of the change in processing arrangements after the Material Recovery Facility loss, Columbia’s current recycling list is narrower than many residents may remember from older drop-off-center rules.
| Material | Current route | Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic bottles | Blue recycling bag | Empty; examples include beverage and water bottles. |
| Plastic containers | Blue recycling bag when accepted under current City guidance | Examples include detergent, milk and shampoo containers. |
| Aluminum beverage cans | Blue recycling bag | Empty before recycling. |
| Metal food cans | Blue recycling bag | Empty and clean enough to avoid food contamination. |
| Cardboard | Mixed-fiber bundle | Flatten and place separately in a box or paper bag. |
| Newspaper | Mixed-fiber bundle | Keep dry and separate from mixed containers. |
| Office paper | Mixed-fiber bundle | Bundle in a box or paper bag. |
For cardboard-specific preparation, see our cardboard box recycling guide.
Glass and Other Materials That Should Not Go in Columbia Recycling Right Now
The City currently tells residents not to place glass in blue recycling bags. Glass bottles and jars can contaminate the recycling stream and damage processing equipment under the current system.
Glass Bottles & Jars
Do not put them in the blue recycling bags under the current City program.
Yogurt Cups & Dairy Tubs
These are currently excluded from the blue-bag recycling list.
Clamshell Containers
Produce clamshells are not currently accepted in the residential blue-bag stream.
Black Plastic
Black takeout containers and similar black plastic items should not go in current City recycling.
Styrofoam
Foam containers and packing material are excluded.
Plastic Bags & Trash
Do not mix grocery bags, film or ordinary garbage into the recycling stream.
Older Columbia recycling lists may be outdated
Before the 2025 facility damage, drop-off-center and processing rules were broader. Use the current City recycling page rather than an older list saved in a directory, PDF or map listing.
Columbia Yard Waste Drop-Off Centers Are Separate and Still Available
The recycling drop-off closure does not mean Columbia’s residential yard-waste centers are closed. The City currently operates two yard-waste drop-off locations for Columbia residents.
Parkside Drive
Located between Cosmo Park and Creasy Springs Road.
Hours: dawn until dusk, seven days a week.
Capen Park
Along Rock Quarry Road near Stadium Boulevard.
Hours: dawn until dusk, seven days a week.
Accepted Yard Waste
The City accepts leaves, grass clippings, brush and small tree limbs. Brush or limbs may be up to 8 feet long and 2 feet in diameter.
Keep Compost Contamination Out
Remove plastic bags, rope, nails, screws, buckets, paint and other non-organic material before drop-off. Large root balls and tree trunks over the published size limits must use the landfill and can be charged at the landfill rate.
Residential yard-waste sites are not for commercial loads
Landscapers, businesses and other commercial customers should use the commercial waste system or the Bioreactor Landfill rather than the residential yard-waste centers.
For broader preparation help, see our yardwaste recycling center guide.
Columbia Household Hazardous Waste Collection: 2026 Schedule and Limits
Columbia residents can dispose of qualifying household hazardous waste at 1313 Lakeview, Columbia, MO 65201. Collections are held on the first and third Saturdays from April through October, 8:00 AM to noon.
July 4 exception in 2026
The City’s current HHW schedule states that there will be no collection on Saturday, July 4.
Resident-Only Service
HHW collection is for City of Columbia residents. Commercial hazardous waste is not accepted, and trailers are not serviced because of the tight operating area.
Paint Limits Per Vehicle
| Paint container size | Maximum accepted from one vehicle |
|---|---|
| 5-gallon buckets | No more than 3 |
| 1-gallon cans or buckets | No more than 15 |
Common HHW Categories
The City’s accepted list includes many household chemicals and special products such as acids, adhesives, aerosol cans, antifreeze, household and rechargeable batteries, bleach, brake fluid, cleaners, fluorescent lights, gasoline, fertilizers, pesticides, motor oil, pool chemicals, stains, varnish, automotive fluids and other hazardous household products.
Important Exclusions
Tires and large electronics are not accepted through the HHW program. Pharmaceuticals are also no longer accepted there and should use an approved medication-disposal route.
Never mix household chemicals
Keep products in original containers whenever practical, secure lids, label unknown containers when possible and transport liquids upright in sturdy boxes. Do not combine products to reduce the number of containers.
For more preparation guidance, see our household hazardous waste recycling center guide.
Bioreactor Landfill: When You Need Disposal Instead of Recycling
The City of Columbia Bioreactor Landfill is at 5700 Peabody Road. It is the main City disposal facility for loads that cannot use curbside service or another specialty program.
General Facility
Monday–Friday: 7 AM–4 PM
Saturday: 8 AM–2 PM
Sunday: Closed
Small Vehicle Drop-Off
Monday–Friday: 7 AM–3 PM
Saturday: 8 AM–1 PM
Sunday: Closed
The landfill phone number is 573-474-9145. Disposal fees depend on the material and load, so verify the current rate before bringing a paid load.
Landfill hours are not recycling drop-off hours
The landfill being open does not mean the closed City recycling drop-off system has reopened. Use the landfill only when your item belongs in that disposal route.
Large Items and Appliances Use a Separate City Collection Route
Residential customers receiving City curbside collection can request large-item pickup for bulky items and major appliances. Requests are handled through the CoMo Recycle and Trash app and the City’s large-item collection process.
Do not take a couch, appliance, oversized household item or large electronic device to a closed recycling drop-off location simply because an old map pin still exists there.
Before-You-Go Checklist for Columbia Recycling and Disposal
Identify the material first
Separate regular recyclables, yard waste, household chemicals, bulky items and disposal waste into different service categories.
Do not drive to an old recycling drop-off site
The municipal recycling drop-off centers remain closed until further notice.
Use curbside for current accepted recycling
Follow Columbia’s current blue-bag and mixed-fiber instructions rather than older drop-off-center sorting rules.
Keep glass out of current City recycling
Glass bottles and jars are excluded from the current blue-bag recycling program.
Use Capen Park or Parkside for yard waste
Keep branches within the City’s size limits and remove plastic bags and non-organic contamination.
Check the HHW calendar for chemicals
Household hazardous waste is accepted only during the scheduled seasonal collection windows.
Check landfill hours and rates for disposal loads
Small-vehicle drop-off closes earlier than the general landfill operating day.
Verify unusual items through the City
Use the CoMo Recycle and Trash app or official Solid Waste pages before transporting a large, hazardous or unusual item.
Columbia Solid Waste and Recycling Map
Because the public recycling drop-off centers are closed, this map points to the City of Columbia area for navigation rather than presenting a former recycling location as an active destination.
Do not interpret a map pin as proof of reopening
Former City recycling drop-off sites can remain visible in map services after operations change. The official City notice is the stronger source for current service status.
