Preparation Rules That Prevent Rejected Loads
- Sort before leaving home. Keep cans, cardboard, glass, paper, plastics and yard waste separated so unloading is faster.
- Empty bags into the correct container. Do not throw plastic bags full of recycling into the bins.
- Rinse jars, cans and containers. Food and liquid residue reduces material quality.
- Keep paper clean and dry. Greasy, wet or food-soiled paper does not belong with clean paper recycling.
- Flatten cardboard. Large intact boxes quickly fill the receiving container.
- Keep #6 plastic and Styrofoam out. The Township specifically excludes these items.
Plastic bags are one of the easiest contamination mistakes
The Township says bags should not be thrown into recycling containers. Empty recyclables from the bag, then dispose of the bag appropriately or take clean stretchy film to an appropriate retail film-recycling program.

The Recycling Center accepts yard waste, but the Township publishes specific size and preparation limits.

- Flatten boxes.
- Tie and stack them.
- Set them beside the carts before 7 AM on the scheduled day.

Batteries do not belong in the curbside trash or recycling cart because damaged lithium batteries can create serious fire risks.

The Woodlands Recycling Center on Research Forest Drive is not the standard electronics drop-off site. Township guidance points many Montgomery County residents to the Montgomery County Precinct 3 Recycling Facility for electronics such as TVs, computers, printers and phones.

County yard waste can be free when separated correctly
The current Precinct 3 guide lists leaves, grass clippings, branches, shrubs, plants and logs under 6 inches in diameter as free when kept separate. Leaves and grass clippings must be bagged. Dirt and soil are not accepted.
Paint and household chemicals at Precinct 3
The county currently accepts paint and household chemicals on Wednesdays and the third Saturday of the month. The published charge is $10 for every 5 gallons.
Do not mix chemicals. Accepted examples include automotive fluids, adhesives, cleaners, fertilizers, pesticides, pool chemicals, stains, varnishes, solvents and degreasers.
Precinct 3 still has a “do not accept” list
Current exclusions include household garbage, ammunition, explosives, medical waste, Styrofoam, radioactive materials, smoke detectors, PCBs, dioxins, mirrors/windows, business waste, pressurized tanks, propane/helium tanks and dirt/soil/sod/gravel.

The Township has separate bulky-item and storm-debris systems. Do not assume the Research Forest Recycling Center accepts furniture, mattresses, construction debris or large storm cleanup loads.

Large household items can use the Township’s bulky/oversized collection rules when they meet program requirements.
Construction debris
Concrete, bricks, roofing, doors, windows, sheetrock, drywall and insulation are not ordinary bulky-pickup recyclables and usually need a landfill, Bagster or private hauling route.
The Township notes that Waste Management Bagster service can hold up to 3,000 pounds for qualifying small-to-medium debris loads, while larger projects may require a roll-off dumpster or solid-waste hauler.
